During our visit to Cuyahoga Valley National Park, we decided to slow down, relax, and take in the park from a completely different perspective—the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad (CVSR). This historic railway winds through the heart of the park, offering a front-row seat to some of Ohio’s most beautiful scenery.
All Aboard the Silver Lariat
We had the chance to ride in the Silver Lariat, a beautifully dome car that added a whole other layer to the experience. Built in 1948 by the Budd Company for the California Zephyr, the Silver Lariat was part of the iconic streamliner era of passenger rail. Back then, it traveled between Chicago and San Francisco, carrying travelers in style through the Rocky Mountains and Sierra Nevada with sweeping dome-top views.
Today, this piece of railroad history lives on as part of the CVSR fleet. Inside, the Silver Lariat has that classic mid-century design and big windows, but the real treat is climbing up into the glass dome seating area. From there, we had panoramic views of the valley all around us — trees stretching in every direction and the Cuyahoga River winding alongside the tracks. It felt like riding through a moving postcard.
Scenic Views of the Valley
As the train made its way along the tracks, we passed forests, wetlands, and open fields, with the Cuyahoga River nearby. Every season brings something different—lush greenery in summer, colorful foliage in fall, and even snowy scenes in winter. From the dome seats, we got a bird’s-eye view that made the ride feel even more magical.
We especially loved spotting wildlife from the train. Great blue herons, deer, and even a few bald eagles are known to make appearances in the valley.
A Flexible Adventure
One of the best parts of the CVSR is that you can hop on and off at different stations along the way. Whether you want to explore a trail, grab a bite to eat in a nearby town, or simply ride the whole route, it’s a customizable experience that works for any traveler.
Why We Recommend It
The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad isn’t just transportation—it’s part of the adventure. Riding in the Silver Lariat made it even more special, knowing we were experiencing a piece of railroad history while enjoying the beauty of the park.
If you’re planning a trip to Cuyahoga Valley, don’t just hike or drive through—ride the rails. The combination of history, scenery, and relaxation is something you’ll remember long after the whistle fades into the distance. 🚂🌲
